“Nineteenth century Australian women novelists delineated life in the outback
from a perspective quite different from that of the masculinist pioneer.” Discuss
with suitable examples. (20)
Early literary endeavours tended to be somewhat gentrified;
they were produced in the English language for an English audience.
Australasia, an Ode (1823), a modest and imitation work by W. C. Wentworth, is
a fine example. In the following decades, interpretative nature poetry by
Charles Harpur (1813–68) and Henry Kendall (1839–82) as well as novels by Henry
Kingsley (the brother of Charles Kingsley), who wrote about pioneer life,
helped Australian authors find at least their topic, if not yet their voice.
Adam Lindsay Gordon started the bush ballad genre, while Henry Lawson
(1867-1922) and A. B. (Banjo) Paterson (1864-1941), whose Man from Snowy River
and Other Verses (1895) contains the well-known tune Waltzing Matilda, brought
it to full bloom.
The books of Rolfe Boldrewood (a pseudonym for Thomas A.
Browne) and James Tucker, whose Ralph Rashleigh (1844) was the first book to
concentrate on Australia's distinctive blend of jail life, aboriginals, and
bushrangers, were less potent but accurate depictions of life in the bush.
Miles Franklin (1879–1954), whose work My Brilliant Career (1901) is frequently
seen as the first novel that really represents Australia, and novelist-diarist
Tom Collins (pseud.
Her letters, which were chosen from a collection of a
lifetime of devoted and active correspondence, demonstrate a remarkable ability
for letter writing. They serve as a record of the vast literary and cultural
network Franklin created and nurtured through that correspondence, a network
that spanned Australia and beyond, but they also serve as a significant
literary record in a mode that feminist criticism has recovered and
acknowledged as having cultural significance in addition to importance for both
authors and readers. With the publication of the highly regarded 1979 film
adaptation of her debut book, Franklin's fame was further enhanced. Australian
Gillian Armstrong directed the movie, which was similarly titled My Brilliant
Career, and it greatly increased popular interest in both the book and its
author.
Through her donation of Australia's most renowned and, until
recently, wealthiest national literary award, the annual Miles Franklin Award,
which she envisioned having a prestige akin to that of the Pulitzer Prize, Franklin's
name has a central and enduring position in Australian literary history. She
always lived modestly and frequently under limited conditions, especially in
her latter adult life, in order to develop and support such an award, and she
left her fortune to this purpose in her testament after her death. The terms of
the award, "for the novel for the year which is of the highest literary
merit and which must present Australian life in any of its phases," have
occasionally been the focus of public debate as judging panels wrestle with the
problem of the novel's ability to present Australian life in any of its phases.
