Answer all questions.
1. Comment on the significance of the
Man of the Hill episode in the novel Tom Jones.
The Man of
the Hill now becomes part of Watson's gambling gang and lives a life of
roller-coaster fortunes. One night, he assists a man who has been robbed and
beaten in the street—it turns out to be his father, who came to London
specifically to search for him. The Man of the Hill goes home with his father
and immerses himself in Philosophy and the Scriptures. Four years later, his
father dies and life becomes difficult as his older brother runs the household
and often entertains "Sportsmen" in the house. On the advice of a
doctor, he leaves home to drink Bath waters. There he saves a man who attempts
suicide by throwing himself into a river. The Man of the Hill, on visiting this
man, discovers that it is his old friend Watson.
The Man of the Hill has only found redemption from his criminal ways by
returning to his father's house and meditating on classical literature and the
Bible. He has had to remove himself entirely from society, since his life among
the people of the city was so terrible and traumatizing that he never wants to
go back to it.
The
placement of the Man of the Hill episode in the novel just as Tom is flailing
around trying to decide what to do next (before he misses Sophia at the inn at
Upton and resolves to find her in London) is definitely significant. There are
elements of his story that are close to Tom's: the MotH abandoned his family
home in shame; he traveled to London; and he even fought against the Jacobites,
as Tom wishes to do.
But the MotH
also serves as a warning: if Tom isn't careful, he could follow the MotH's
example when he faces the sins and temptations of London life. Luckily, Tom's
tale goes off in a very different direction than the MotH's.

The Man of
the Hill incident, in particular, has sparked debate among most critics of the
twentieth century. Its examination may assist us in identifying Fielding’s
broader social and moral concerns. The study may also offer insight on
Fielding’s perspective on the novel’s epic character. For example, R. S. Crane,
an American critic of the New Criticism school, is dissatisfied with Fielding’s
numerous remarks, explanations, and incidents in the book since, in his
opinion, Fielding simply “says” his viewpoint with their assistance. Crane is
particularly unsure about the “good values this (the Man of the Hill’s event)
may have” in the novel’s narrative structure.
Fielding, on
the other hand, has framed the incident as the old man’s “History” and “Story.”
Fielding’s stated goal is to incorporate “his history” and “story” into Tom
Jones’7. Second, the Man of the Hill’s tale – his entire story from childhood
to old age – is based on facts. Isn’t that what we mean when we talk about
history? However, “story” may also refer to a fictitious narrative – something
that people in their environment see and portray. The tale is told by the Man
of the Hill himself. Maybe he’s trying to explain his choice to live alone,
shut off from the world he was born into. As a result, he tells the tale, which
is an imaginary creation. Let us now consider some of the most significant
elements of Fielding’s “Story” and “History” as given in the old man’s words.
In the book, “a really remarkable adventure” arises from the encounter of Tom
Jones and Partridge, both travellers, with the Man of the Hill, which is not
simply in terms of an event involving theft and physical assault. It’s also Tom
and Partridge’s encounter with someone who has gone through the highs and lows
of life and has been through a lot of suffering. That is how the Man of the
Hill’s life storey is described as “the tale of an unhappy man,” which Tom and
his friend listen to with bated breath.
It is a
story that begins when the Man of the Hill was a kid and ends after he has
reached the conclusion that he has lived a full life “Interest in a single man.
It is a story that begins when the Man of the Hill was a child and ends when he
has come to the conclusion that “Man alone, the king of this globe, the last
and greatest work of the Supreme Being, below the sun; man alone has basely
dishonoured his own nature, and has called his Maker’s goodness into question
by dishonesty, cruelty, ingratitude, and accursed treachery” (43 1). It’s a
lengthy statement, and the Man of the Hill seems to be trying to find the right
words to express himself. While man has been described to as “the ruler of the
world” and “the last and greatest achievement of the Supreme Being” in this
portrayal of human nature, there is the recognition, based on observation and
experience, that he is really “imperfect” and a “vile beast.”
2. Comment on the use of wit and
irony in the novel Pride and Prejudice.
Jane Austen
(1775-1817) one of the realistic novelists was born in Hampshire. Her father
was a clergyman and had acquired good taste in the choice of reading material.
As such, Jane’s education was conducted on sound lines. Her first published
works were issued anonymously. She died quite early before her merits had
received anything like adequate recognition. As her works were not published in
the order of composition, therefore, it is not possible to follow the
chronology.
However, her
first novel was Pride and Prejudice followed by Sense and
Sensibility. Between 1798 and 1811 there was a pause in her writing. Then the
three novels followed in quick succession- Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion. All
her works are much the same yet subtly and artistically different.
In Pride
and Prejudice we have middle class people pursuing the common round. The
heroine is a girl of spirit with no extraordinary qualities. Her prejudice, the
pride of rank and wealth are gently but pleasingly tilted as if they are being
subjected to an electric current of carefully selected intensity. The style is
smooth and unobtrusive but covers a delicate pricking of irony that is
agreeable and masterly in its quiet way. In unobtrusive and dexterous art the
book is considered to be her masterpiece. Jane Austen uses ironic statements throughout
her narration to comment on social behaviour. The novel begins with one such
statement,
It is truth
universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must
be in want of a wife.
The
generalization and the assumption in this sentence, that, all people know that
a single rich man must want a wife is humorous and sarcastic. She is attacking
the attitude of society that views this man as a possession to be grasped by
the most enterprising mother and daughters. It is not only in narration that
Jane Austen uses wit. Her most admirable characters in the novel are those that
are themselves witty. Mr. Bennet, for example is described as thus,
Mr. Bennet
was so odd a mixture of quick tarts, sarcastic humour, reserve and caprice…
While he has
his faults, we are meant to admire this sarcastic man, and thus, to admire the
way in which he shuns the standards of society. Elizabeth Bennet, the
protagonist is also a witty character that uses irony to her advantage,
She had a
lovely, playful disposition which delighted in anything ridiculous.
The wit is
as noted more varied. There is the wit displayed by the characters as when
Lizzy says the following to Jane-
Well, he
certainly is very agreeable, and I give you leave to like him. You have liked
many a stupider person.
The subject
of wit and irony in Jane Austen’s great novel is so rich that we can start the
subject anywhere. In general, there are several kinds of irony and a wide
variety of wit. The ironies are situational like- when Lady Catherine de Bourgh
approaches Lizzy about marrying Darcy; she helps create the very thing she
wants to avoid.
