The following particulars relate to a two-row velocity compounded impulse wheel :

Steam velocity at nozzle outlet = 650 m/s

Mean blade velocity = 125m/s

Nozzle outlet angle = 16 0

Outlet angle, first row of moving blades = 18 0

Outlet angle, fixed guide blades = 22 0

Outlet angle, second row of moving blades = 36 0

Steam flow = 2.5 kg/s

The ratio of the relative velocity at outlet to that at inlet is 0.84 for all blades. Determinethe following :

(i) The axil thrust on the blades,

(ii) The power developed, and

(iii) The efficiency of the wheel.

(b) Sketch the layout of hydro electric power plant and explain the functions of eachcomponent in it. Discuss the advantages and limitations of this power plant.

Q.7 (a) Explain the working of a gas turbine power plant with the help of block diagramandT-S diagram. How can we improve the performance of such power plant?

(b) Explain in detail about Regeneration, Reheating and Inter cooling.

Q.8 A surface condenser deals with 13625 kg of steam per hour at a pressure of 0.09bar. Thesteam enters 0.85 dry and the temperature at the condensate and air extraction pipesis36°c. The air leakage amounts to 7.26 kg/hour. Determine

(i) The surface required if the average heat transmission rate is 3.97kJ/cm2 persecond, and

(ii) The cylinder diameter for the dry air pump, if it is to be single actingat 60r.p.mwith a stroke to bore ratio of 1.25 and volumetric efficiency of 0.85.

Q.9 Define critical pressure ratio of a nozzle and discuss why the attainment of sonicvelocity determines the maximum rate of flow through steam nozzle.
